2005 saw the launch of BMW’s first High Performance motorcycle, which ran that very fine line between stupidly crazy and utter genius. The HP concept was to mirror the car company’s iconic Motorsport (or M) Division with limited production run ‘specials’ which could showcase their engineering abilities.

This 105bhp, 1170cc monster enduro bike was stripped down to a remarkable 175kg dry weight (a further 25kg off its distant relative the R 1200 GS) and made for some serious fun for those who could get their head around the ‘So, really, what’s the point then?’ question. This was such a refreshing direction for BMW Motorrad to take as it was undoubtedly created by off road enthusiasts and passionate engineers, a spirit that hailed back to BMW’s off road success with a modified R 69 S in the early 1960s and eventually lead to the birth of an icon with the R 80 G/S. We doubt there was ever an accountant in the room when these HP models were first discussed.

The traditional Telelever front suspension was dispensed with in favour of upside down forks, a lightweight rear air shock in combination with an engine devoid of any unnecessary parts all mounted to a bespoke trellis frame showed that this was not a bike just for show.

Indeed, in 2006, BMW entered the infamous Erzberg Rodeo enduro with the HP2 Enduro and a dream rider line up, that can be seen to great success on video here:

This bike is first registered in Italy with 9,228 miles and comes with a spare wheel set (17 inch and 19 inch front and a 17 inch rear all shod with road tyres).
